Capt. John Smith called the area of Onancock "the Gem of the Eastern Shore" in the 1600s. Budget Travel called it "The Coolest Town in the South." Others have said its "a town with heart." Who can disagree? With under 1500 in population, we still have a live theater, world class, award winning restaurants, and an old time movie theater that has an International Film Festival. Our art scene is unparalleled with renowned artists, craftsmen, sculptors, actors, dancers, musicians, glass blowers,...you name it. The beauty of our nature and wildlife is astounding. Take a kayak trip to a local winery or the site of an old Indian village. Sail across the Bay to the island of Tangier from our deep water port. See cranes, herons, bald eagles, falcons, hawks, osprey on the way. Many homes are Backyard Wildlife Refuges. Catch your crab from the wharf, have a drink at the Irish pub, listen to local music...ah, the Shorebilly life! Stay at an award winning Bed and Breakfast. Some are family and dog friendly. And even in a state as rich in history as Virginia, Onancock stands out. Visit the Ker Place or Watermen's Museum to learn about one of the oldest towns in Virginia. Onacock is truly the place where 'History meets Hospitality'.

Founded in 1884, the little town of Nassawadox's translation of its Indian name is “beautiful place between the waters”. What locals jokingly refer to as “greater downtown Nassawadox’ includes a bank, some little shops and an art gallery, plus the colorful “Little Italy” restaurant. The new library is also located in Nassawadox and membership there opens access to the many public libraries throughout Virginia. Just down from the library is Brownsville, the home of the Eastern Shore chapter of The Nature Conservancy which oversees management of The Virginia Coast Reserve, our pristine chain of 18 off-shore barrier islands, now declared a “United Nations BioSphere.” The Northampton County Little League field is located there and a number of community events are held here including the annual horse show and the Brownsville Marathon Run. Residents of Nassawadox enjoy a quiet lifestyle with easy access to public boat ramps nearby and golf and beaches only 15 minutes away. And just outside town several beautiful little waterfront neighborhoods offering existing homes or lots on which to build your dream home.

    Jamesville, Virginia Demographics & Statistics

“Silver Beach” is the fond nickname given to the area known more formally to the US Post Office as Jamesville, Virginia. Named for the sparkling waters with diamond-dash;like reflections shimmering along the shallows of the Chesapeake Bay where it meets this long stretch of shoreline, the Silver Beach area is defined by its proximity to extensive stretches of sugary soft sand beaches. Little upscale neighborhoods with names like Peaceful Beach and Peaceful Shores have been tastefully developed to accommodate those whose sweetest dream is to live the relaxed beach life. Baby Boomer locals reminisce about slow dancing under the stars out on the veranda of the old Silver Beach Hotel, the music infused with the romance of waves lapping along the beach. Although the hotel is long gone, the enchantments of the beach and the waves are still appreciated by the folks who have bought beautiful beachfront and beach access lots and built their dream homes along this gorgeous stretch of coastline. If you are hoping to live on or near the beach, consider a home or lots located in one of these little Silver Beach area neighborhoods. Whether it’s for leisure, retirement or fulltime living, get ready to love the sweet beach life here! And for those who are more interested in a boating lifestyle, several little neighborhoods are available nearby which are centered around the salt waters of broad inlets from the Chesapeake Bay, offering opportunities for backyard boat docks rather than beach.

    Exmore Virginia Demographics & Statistics

    Courtesy of UnitedStaesZipCodes.Org

A town originally centered around railroad commerce, Exmore’s unusual name derives from the railroad and Roman numerology. It was 10 (X) more stops to the end of the line, hence the name “Exmore”! Today Exmore is known primarily for being the largest of Northampton County’s 3 main shopping areas. From Rite Aide and Food Lion to the delicious General Tso’s Shrimp served at China Wok, from Roses to Yellow Duck Bakery (home of the best muffins ever), the Exmore area is a go-to place for shopping and restaurants. It’s also home to New Ravenna, a unique art company creating intricate custom marble mosaic tile designs for walls, floors, tables, etc., sold world wide, including to such celebrities as Tom Hanks and Madonna. On the Bayside outside Exmore are several attractive little waterfront neighborhoods offering homes and lots featuring deep water boating and easy access to the Chesapeake Bay. Just outside Exmore on the Seaside is the tiny waterfront hamlet of Willis Wharf which includes over a dozen homes which were barged over from Hog Island decades ago. Still a fishing village today, its economy continuing to revolve around clams and oysters, Willis Wharf is a colorful place. Its town marina and deep water boat ramp offer easy access to our pristine off-shore barriers islands and the Atlantic Ocean beyond, helping folks living in and around Exmore to continue the Shore’s proud coastal traditions. Eastville Map

Eastville is a small Eastern Shore of Virginia inland town with a most impressive claim to fame–it houses the oldest continuous court records in the United States, dating back to 1677 ! Today, people come from all over research these fascinating old records. In 1776, the Eastville Courthouse was the site of the public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Today Courthouse Green features a row of 19th century attorneys offices, the Debtors Prison, the Old Clerk’s Office and the historic Eastville Inn. Built around 1760, it was an elegant private home until converted into an inn. The restaurant portion is still going strong and is very popular now for its excellent food, local wines and historic ambience. The town today has many well maintained historic homes and is a pleasure to see. Not far from the town center are several small waterfront neighborhoods with beachfront or boating oriented homes and lots. Homes in these little neighborhoods tend to be traditional in design on the street side but more contemporary on the water side, with lots of windows to properly appreciate the gorgeous water views and spectacular sunsets. One little neighborhood is located on land once owned by Governor Yeardley, one of Virginia’s earliest governors, thus pulling together the old and the new, the historic and the modern.

    Cheriton

    About Cheriton Virginia

    cheriton virginia

Named after Cherrystone Creek, a saltwater inlet from the Chesapeake Bay and home to the famous and tasty Cherrystone clam, Cheriton is a small, colorful hamlet located between the Bay and the sea. Founded in 1884, Cheriton residents enjoy a quiet life anchored by a tiny downtown area with little shops and an art gallery plus nearby banks, medical offices and shopping center. The boat ramps of Oyster and Cape Charles just a few minutes away offer easy access to either the Atlantic or the Chesapeake, especially convenient for those looking for flounder, drum or trout or even an off–shore tuna excursion. And the beaches, Palmer and Nicklaus Signature golf courses, restaurants, shops and library at Cape Charles, less than 10 minutes away, offer so much to do. The well maintained homes of Cheriton range from the modest to the large and historic but all offer their owners a big slice of the Eastern Shore of Virginia’s serene, coastal way of life. And not far from town are a number of small waterfront neighborhoods, both Bayside and Seaside, offering beachfront or boating homes or lots for sale, all centered around our relaxed, water–oriented lifestyles.

    commercial property for sale

Located near the very tip of the Eastern Shore, Cape Charles was created from scratch in 1886 to be the southern terminus of the Pennsylvania Railroad whose tracks ran right to the ferry terminal at its deep water harbor. Its wide beach helped it become a popular resort town with inns, restaurants and lots of little shops for visitors to enjoy. Over a million people per year traveled to or through Cape Charles – but all of that came to an end in the early 1960’s when the Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel opened and the ferry closed. Cape Charles slowly sank into oblivion until construction of the Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus signature golf courses began in 1999.

Now, in the midst of the Renaissance kicked off by the construction of Bay Creek Resort and Club Cape Charles is well on its way to glory days once again and was selected as one of the TOP 10 Best Coastal Towns to Live by Costal Living Magazine in 2024. Its deep water harbor has been restored and tall sailing ships, yachts and crabber’s deadrise boats can be seen bobbing side by side at the new town marina not far from the beach and new fishing pier. A stroll through the commercial portion of the Historic District boasts beautiful Victorian buildings, painstakingly restored and lively with customers once more. The Palace Theatre has been restored to its original Art Deco beauty. The oldest bank in town, built in the Romanesque style, gorgeous interior and exterior details lovingly preserved, now transformed into “Kellys” restaurant, famous for some of the best fish & chips around! Everywhere you look it’s obvious that preservation of its Victorian heritage and relaxed, coastal traditions have been uppermost in the minds of modern Cape Charles residents. Many of the elegant old homes have been purchased as leisure or retirement homes and given face lifts and new leases on life. For those interested in purchasing property in Cape Charles , one of the more interesting aspects of the town is the availability of a variety of home styles including American 4 Square, Gothic Revival, Georgian, Victorian, Saltbox, Sears cottage style, etc. all standing side by side in a glorious architectural stew created in the early 1900’s. Cape Charles is truly the pearl of the Eastern Shore, our Mayberry, complete with wonderful front porches, offering a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and presenting lifestyle choices galore–beach, boating , golf, historic. What more could anyone ask of a small coastal town?

Virginia Found host Dave Parker explores the lower Eastern Shore around Cape Charles, Virginia. In this episode, take the world's first kayaking winery trip, see places to stay that range from plush to family fun, learn about world class golf courses, see how the beaches compare to others in the state, and see why visiting the Eastern Shore is truly a getaway.

"Best Coastal Community"- Virginia Living Magazine 2020

One Magnificent Location, Nine Gated Communities delivering an Unparalleled Lifestyle.

The Bay Creek Resort & Club located in Cape Charles, Virginia was sculpted from 1800 acres which included rich farmlands whose historic ownership can be traced all the way back to Land Grants from the King of England, hardwood and pine forests, beautiful soft sand beaches stretching for miles along the Chesapeake Bay and thriving marine and wildlife habitats along the saltwater shorelines of beautiful Old Plantation Creek, a broad inlet from the Bay. Having this exceptional mix of raw ingredients enabled the developer to convince golf course legends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus to take advantage of these special qualities to design an Eastern Shore Virginia unique golf environment. Today Bay Creek has 27 intertwined Palmer and Nicklaus Signature Design holes that deliver a fabulous golf experience for golfers of all levels. With lavishly landscaped surroundings, sculpted sand bunkers, silky smooth greens and beautiful waterfront holes sited along the Chesapeake Bay and Old Plantation Creek. Golfers are treated to glimpses of blue herons in the marsh, ospreys and bald eagles swooping overhead, sailboats gliding by and dolphins gracefully swimming on sparkling Bay waters– this is some really great Virginia Eastern Shore golf, Bay Creek style!

In addition to world-class golf, current Bay Creek Resort and Club amenities include 2 community swimming pools, tennis and pickle-ball courts, 2 miles of private white sandy beaches, miles of multi-use trails meandering through lush, meticulously maintained flora and a 350 acre permanent nature preserve to feature (planned) kayak launches, a community garden, education center and more. The Fitness Center features 10,000 square feet of fun and fitness with sweeping views of the Chesapeake Bay.  Open to Bay Creek Members and Resort Guests- the 5,000 square-foot fitness center provides circuit and strength training areas featuring brand new state-of-the-art equipment. The Cardio theater with views of the Bay- features treadmills, bikes, elliptical and rowing machines from Cybex and Octane. Also located within the facility are a 2,800 square-foot members' lounge, up-scale locker rooms for men and women, two outdoor swimming pools, one with lap lanes as well as a splash zone with a giant slide for kids of all ages. Members will also enjoy future planned amenities including a Beach Club featuring all of things one would expect from an up-scale facility including an expansive bay-front swimming pool and cabanas with food and beverage service. , as well as a water activity area for kayaking, canoeing and waterboarding.

Within a short golf cart ride away from any Bay Creek community (10 in all) is one of the very best marinas on the East Coast, the state-of-the-art King's Creek Marina, named by “Southern Boating” magazine as one of the “Top Ten Marinas To Visit”. Located in the protected King’s Creek harbor close to its confluence with the Chesapeake Bay , this beautifully designed marina boasts a channel of about 7 ft. at MLW, floating slips up to 70 feet long, accommodating boats up to 150 feet and offering electric power up to 100 AMPS. The Complete Angler, its marine and tackle store, is fully stocked with everything the sports fisherman may need and more. Even if you’re not a boater, you’ll still be really impressed with this beautiful, top of the line marina.

But what is most impressive about Bay Creek Resort and Club, outside of its fabulous golf, many acres of sparkling sand beaches and impressive fitness center along with many community amenities and activities,  is its intimate little residential villages, each offering its own special architectural theme. From the breezy and colorful British West Indies style homes in the beachfront village of “The Colony” to the William Poole traditional coastal living style homes at “The Signatures”, to the impressive mansions at “Plantation Pointe” and “Heron Pointe”, or "Bayside Village" the site of four magnificent "Ideal Living Homes" a noteworthy honor as no community has ever been host to four of these spectacular homes at once.  Each village offers a different feel and a different lifestyle choice to buyers and the reason Bay Creek was selected as a "Southern Living Inspired Community"– one of only 17 communities across the nation to earn this prestigious designation.
