About Exmore Virginia
A town originally centered around railroad commerce, Exmore’s unusual name derives from the railroad and Roman numerology. It was 10 (X) more stops to the end of the line, hence the name “Exmore”! Today Exmore is known primarily for being the largest of Northampton County’s 3 main shopping areas. From Rite Aide and Food Lion to the delicious General Tso’s Shrimp served at China Wok, from Roses to Yellow Duck Bakery (home of the best muffins ever), the Exmore area is a go-to place for shopping and restaurants. It’s also home to New Ravenna, a unique art company creating intricate custom marble mosaic tile designs for walls, floors, tables, etc., sold world wide, including to such celebrities as Tom Hanks and Madonna. On the Bayside outside Exmore are several attractive little waterfront neighborhoods offering homes and lots featuring deep water boating and easy access to the Chesapeake Bay. Just outside Exmore on the Seaside is the tiny waterfront hamlet of Willis Wharf which includes over a dozen homes which were barged over from Hog Island decades ago. Still a fishing village today, its economy continuing to revolve around clams and oysters, Willis Wharf is a colorful place. Its town marina and deep water boat ramp offer easy access to our pristine off-shore barriers islands and the Atlantic Ocean beyond, helping folks living in and around Exmore to continue the Shore’s proud coastal traditions.
